Semitones is a group of volunteer musicians who give free concerts in care homes, hospices and supported living centres around Newcastle.
We share the joy of playing music together and we like to contribute to the community by giving concerts. Our group consists of players (12+) of mostly (but not only!) classical instruments which, at the moment, include violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, oboe, cor anglais, clarinet, trumpet, concertina and piano. If you play an instrument at grade 3 level or higher and you are interested in playing with Semitones, please contact us. |
We play on Sunday afternoons in the care homes and centres.
Our programmes contain classical and popular music, folk tunes and songs to which the audience sing along. We go to great lengths in ensuring the audience enjoys the music we play and that the repertoire of music in the programme is suitable. The concerts last approximately one hour. Usually there are between ten and fifteen musicians, depending on their availability. Here is a flavour of the sort of music we play:
Well-known classics:
e.g. The Four Seasons, Liberty Bell, Die Fledermaus, Radetsky March, The Second Waltz, Pomp & Circumstance, The Blue Danube, The Entertainer, Rondo Alla Turca
Medleys from the shows:
e.g. West Side Story, Oliver, My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music, Oklahoma, Fiddler on the Roof
Folk music:
e.g. English, Irish & Scottish folk medleys, Irish jigs and reels, Tyneside songs.
Pop and rock oldies:
e.g. Rock Around the Clock, A Whiter Shade of Pale, Yesterday, Sound of Silence
War-time songs:
e.g. First World War song medley, Vera Lynn songs
Film and TV:
e.g. The Magnificent Seven, Over the Rainbow, The Pink Panther, Match of the Day
As a voluntary group we welcome a donation to assist in covering our expenses incurred in the purchase of sheet music and other materials essential to offering high quality musical entertainment.
